March Birthstone – Aquamarine
Aquamarine is the birthstone of the month of March. The stone is technically considered a “beryl” — the same mineral family as emerald — and ideal specimens are pure and deep blue in color.
The mining of beryl goes back at least to the Roman and Greek eras. One legend describes aquamarine as a treasure lost by the God Neptune. Roman sailors collected the gemstone to show signs of fealty to their patron God, hoping to ward off danger at sea. The name “aquamarine” stems from Latin words meaning water and sea, and Romans (and many who followed) swore that aquamarine emanated special healing powers, such as the potential to detoxify people. Aquamarine-soaked water was often used as a palliative for all number of ills, including stomach flu and seasickness.
In addition, aquamarine has been said to have special powers for reigniting passion among long-term lovers. It is meant to be given as a gift for the 16th wedding anniversary; its durability and hardness attest to its symbolic strength.
The mineralogy of beryl is quite fascinating. Many jewelry-grade aquamarine stones are almost totally flawless — an attribute that’s highly uncommon among the major birthstones. Some gemstone craftsmen heat up aquamarine stones to get a darker bluish coloration from them.
