The history of the Claddagh and how it became such a venerated symbol in Ireland and within the Celtic culture worldwide is one of legends. As the story goes, an Irish man, Richard Joyce, was captured on his way to the West Indies and forced into slavery in Algiers. He was trained as a goldsmith during his time in captivity.

When he was finally set free, Richard Joyce turned down the hand of his master’s daughter and half his master’s fortune to return home to his one true love in Ireland. When he returned, he presented his beloved with the Claddagh ring he had made for her as a symbol of his love, and they were married.
