Richard Joyce, a Galway native, is credited with the design of the Claddagh. Captured by pirates in the early 16th century, Richard eventually escaped captivity and returned to Ireland to find his true love. He fashioned the unique arrangement of symbols in the form of a ring for the girl he'd left behind.
