Warrior Queen of Connaucht...

We have named this wedding ring 'Medb' after the “Warrior Queen of Connaucht” whom is most well-known for the Cattle Raid of Cooley. In an argument with her husband, Ailill, about who was wealthier, she learned that he was richer than her by one stud bull.

Wanting to be on equal footing with her husband, she found the only bull that was equal to her husband’s bull, Finnbennach. This bull named Donn Cúailnge was owned by Dáire mac Fiachna, a vassal of her enemy and ex-husband Conchobar.

Medv sent a messenger to Dáire mac Fiachna offering him land, wealth, and even sexual favors for the bull. Dáire gave his agreement, but when the messenger, who was drunk, told him that if he had not agreed the bull would have been taken by force, Dáire withdrew consent. This caused Medb to prepare for war.

She raised her army from all over Ireland. She included a group of Ulster exiles that were led by the estranged son of Conchobar, Cormac Cond Longas. Also leading the group was Fergus mac Róich, who was one of Medb’s lovers as well as Cormac’s foster-father.

The invading army was met by only one individual from Ulster, the teenage hero Cúchulainn. He insisted that the army battle him one on one. Medb and Ailill offered their only daughter, Findabair, as a reward for whoever could defeat Cúchulainn. Every soldier that went against him was defeated, but Medb still secured the bull.

In the end Conchobar was able to assemble an army. This caused Medb to retreat, but with the bull in tack. When she returned home with Donn Cúailnge, it fought Ailill’s bull, Finnbennach, and killed him, but later died also because of the wounds that it had gained.
