The birth of Lug...

Eitna is also spelled Ethniu in Old Irish and Eithne in Irish. There are also a variety of other spellings such as Ethlinn. One story involving the name involved the Formorians and the Tuatha de Dannan, and here is one version of that story.

Balor, the one-eyed giant king of the Formorians, learned from a druid priest that one day his grandson would murder him. Upon hearing this prophecy, Balor imprisoned his only daughter Ethniu in the great tower of Tory. In the tower she was cared for by 12 women, who were responsible for making sure she never learned about men.

Balor learned of a magical cow that gave an abundance of milk, and it was said to guarantee no clan would ever go hungry. One summer day, Balor appeared to Mac Cinnfhaelaidh, the owner of the cow, as a young red headed boy, and tricked him into giving up the cow. When Mac Cinnfhaelaidh learns that it was Balor who actually stole the cow he sought revenge.

Mac Cinnfhaelaidh gets the help of the Leanan Sidhe or fairy women, and they send Biróg to his assistance. With this help he was able to be magically transported to the great tower. There he seduces Ethniu, who later gives birth to triplets.

When Balor learned of the deception, he gathered up the three boys and sent them to a messenger to be drowned in the river. The messenger manages to drown two of them, but the third was dropped by accident in the harbor where he is rescued by the Biróg.

They take the boy to his father, but he feared that Balor would learn of his existence and gave him to his brother Gavida. The blacksmith would raise the boy, Lug, as his own.
