Cúchulainn - Celtic Warrior...

There are many warrior stories from the Ancient Celtics. There are those of real people who fought for their land against invaders or other power hungry kings, and there are the stories of their Gods.

These stories were probably inspired by heroes that really existed or were used to inspire warriors before going into battle. One of the best known Celtic heroes was Cúchulainn.

Cúchulainn was originally named Setanta and a prominent figure in the Ulster cycle, and he was commonly known as the “Hound of Ulster”. His father was the God Lug and his mother, Deichtine, was Conor’s sister. He was the nephew and foster son of King Conor of Emanaia.

His warrior prowess was first recognized when he attended court for the first time and played Camán or hurling with the other youths. He played so well he was acknowledged by the warriors of the Red Branch.

He was probably most well-known for defending Ulster from the Medb, Queen of Connacht and her armies in The Cattle Raid of Cooley. At age 17 he kept the armies from advancing by calling the right of single combat. By doing this he was able to defeat one champion after another, and even though the battle would last months, he was still able to keep them at bay.

During the battle, Cúchulainn had to overcome being attacked by the Morrigan after he denied her affection when she came to him in disguise. He was later also severely wounded, but Lug visited him and told Cúchulainn that he was his father and healed him.

He was said to have built walls of corpses during the several months that the battle raged on. He even had to battle one of his other foster father’s Fergus mac Róich, who was in exile in Medb’s court. He agreed to yield, however, as long as Fergus would return the favor the next time they met. He was not so lucky when it came to battling his foster brother, Ferdiad, though. The two fought a long three-day battle.

The end of the invasion came when Fergus was advancing and while Cúchulainn was recuperating; however, Cúchulainn spotted him and confronted him causing Fergus to honor their agreement. This causes other warriors to panic, and finally, Medb is forced to retreat.

As they are retreating, Cúchulainn has a chance to kill Medb but lets her go as he does not believe in killing women. However, this would be one of the primary mistakes that would lead to his early death later on.
